Reuters is thrilled to announce the launch of a pioneering new initiative in collaboration with the Digital Production Partnership (DPP) - the Live Production Exchange (LPX) metadata standard. This innovative technology is set to transform the media landscape by enabling seamless machine-to-machine communication for live video streams.
The LPX API and metadata standard will debut. at IBC Amsterdam 2024 with the launch of the Reuters Live API. This is the first service of its kind to use the standard, and marks a significant milestone in the industry.
The Reuters Live API is designed to offer broadcasters and digital newsrooms unprecedented integration options for real-time live video signals from breaking news events around the world. By leveraging API-driven automation, broadcasters and publishers will be empowered to innovate with live video, streamline their workflows, and achieve remarkable efficiencies in their newsrooms, while removing the need for manual input.
nxtedition, a next-generation newsroom system, is the first to integrate with the Reuters Live API using the LPX metadata standard. The integration promises significant benefits in terms of sustainability, speed, and content management, setting a new benchmark for the industry.
Adam Leah, Creative Director at nxtedition said “We’re excited to integrate the LPX standard into our platform, significantly enhancing the value we deliver to our clients. LPX’s ability to subscribe to live events and provide real-time updates to users is just one of its powerful features. While much of the industry is focused on AI solutions, it’s important to recognise the tangible benefits that a simple API and metadata standard like LPX can bring. nxtedition is built to harness modern API standards, enabling our clients to operate faster and more efficiently, making this a true evolution in live production workflows.”
Reuters Imagen, the recent technology acquisition rebranded under Reuters, will expand the use case beyond news into sports. Imagen will harness the power of the LPX technology for ingesting and archiving live sports video. This advancement will automate the currently manual process of scheduling, updating, and curating live sports events. With the LPX API and metadata standard, customers can auto-schedule live events in their systems, which will then be recorded in Imagen without human intervention, ensuring key moments are captured live and made accessible instantly.
Ian McLaren, Chief Technology and Product Officer of Reuters Imagen stated, "With the LPX, we take people out of the workflow and create seamless automations. Reuters and Imagen are transforming the industry, making it simpler and more efficient, and reducing costs for our customers."
David Thomson, Technology Strategist, DPPO said “ .....”
The launch of the LPX API and metadata standard follows the success of a recent DPP industry hackathon hosted by Reuters in London which aimed to solve an industry-wide need for live video standardisation across the industry. The event brought together over60 news media experts with the goal of revolutionizing live video distribution and showcased how directly integrating live coverage information with associated video content into newsroom systems could significantly speed up the delivery of live events to audiences. Reuters has worked with the DPP and partner organisations such as CNN, Arqiva and the BBC along with the IPTC standards body to create the specification.
